Hair loss can be worrying, and many people are understandably concerned when they notice increased shedding or thinning.
In most cases, however, there is a clear explanation and a structured approach to assessment. Hair conditions are broadly divided into non-scarring alopecias, where the hair follicles remain intact and regrowth is usually possible, and scarring alopecias, where inflammation may damage the follicle if not recognised early.
As a consultant dermatologist, I focus on accurate diagnosis through careful history-taking and scalp examination — often supported by dermoscopy — with appropriate investigations where needed. This then allows for evidence-based management to be discussed. Establishing the cause is the most important step, and in many cases the outlook is more reassuring than patients initially fear.
